FEBRUARY CFA BOARD MEETING NOTES FROM NAR REGIONAL DIRECTOR

These are my personal notes from the February CFA board meeting.  They are by no means official – the official minutes will be distributed by the CFA Secretary.

New club applications

1)     Grand Canyon Cat Club, Phoenix, AZ, (Region 5) – several points of concern were raised regarding this club.  Two of the local clubs objected to its acceptance, as there were already three clubs in the Phoenix area.  Letters of support were received from other clubs, and it had the approval of the regional director, George Eigenhauser – passed with 7 “no” votes.

2)     Las Flores Cat Club, Las Flores, CA – (Region 5) – some discussion regarding the membership crossover, club had RD’s approval – passed with 3 “no’s” and 1 abstention.

3)     Prestige Siberian Alliance – this would be a second Siberian breed club, one already is in existence.  Club application failed unanimously.

International Division (Stan Barnaby)

The International Qualifier drew a great entry of 321, with exhibitors in attendance from 12 countries.  Two clerking schools were held in December, one in Germany and one in Holland, as the need was recognized to have more certified clerks in the Intl. Division.

Judging Program committee report

The resignation of Miriam Faulkner was accepted with great regret.  Margot Mellies was granted a medical leave of absence.

In the future, the judges would be required to pass the judge’s test with a score of 85% or better.  If they failed on the first test, they would be re-sent that test and not told which answers were incorrect on the first test.  The following judges were approved/advanced:

Paula Boroff – approved Allbreed

Wakako Nagayama – Approval Pending Allbreed

Jan Stevens – Approval Pending LH

Susan Johnson – Apprentice SH

Minoru Maeda – Apprentice LH

JoAnn Miksa – Apprentice SH

The next are all 2nd specialty-

Holly Ayers – Accepted as SH trainee

Ellyn Honey – Accepted as LH trainee

Kazuko Kurokawa – Accepted as SH Trainee

Ray Pinder – Accepted as LH Trainee

Jan Rogers – Accepted as SH Trainee

Ayumi Ueda – Accepted as SH Trainee

John Webster – Accepted as LH Trainee

All current judges were re-licensed.

Central Office Operations

Out of region show requests – National Siamese Cat Club (Region 1 club) requested permission to hold their show on Oct 18-19-, 2003 in Region 4 – granted

United Silver Fanciers (Region 4 club) requested permission to hold their show on July 24-25, 2004 in Region 6 – permission granted.

Crab and Mallet (region 7 club) was granted permission to conduct a “Veterans ring in conjunction with their show on March 8-9, 2003.  Permission granted.  Tom Dent had drawn up guidelines for this type of ring.  Show rules Chairperson Gary Veach, at the board’s request, drew up a plan to change the appropriate show rules to allow Veterans rings to be held by clubs without special board permission.  The following is an outline of the requirements:

1)     must be held at a 1-day 4 ring show or any 2 day show.  (In other words, they may not be held at a one-day, six ring show)

2)     agreement of the judges must be obtained in advance

3)     Awards are limited to Best through 10th best Cat, and anything in between

4)     There will be no scoring of any type – this must be stated on the show flyer

5)     Cats must be seven years and older

Kitten registration/scoring

“Same day service” is now offered for kitten registrations.  Here is how this will work – if you take an unregistered kitten or kittens to a show and they make finals AND you would like to see your points in the Almanac, you can overnight the registrations to CO on Monday.  They must be received by 5PM on Tuesday and MUST be accompanied by a $50.00 same-day service fee.

Ancestry Recording Service

Formerly refereed to as “Tom’s Registry” this will allow CFA to track pedigrees of previously unrecorded cats.

1)     this is to record ancestry only, does not provide a pedigree as such

2)     Litter recording rules – 1)  both parents must be recorded   2)  Matings between any recorded cats are permitted

3)     No wild cat outcrosses are permitted

More to come on this service later.

International Show (Debbie Kusy)

The gate for this year’s show was the best ever – over 10,000 spectators attended the show.  However, the show still realized a financial loss of approx. $14K.  The International Committee held a meeting on Friday to discuss ways to improve that next year and is confident that the show will be back in the black.

The board approved the hiring of the same PR firm for 2003.  They also approved renting the smaller hall for 2003 and limiting the entry to 1000 cats.

The committee also requested a donation to the Winn Foundation, as had been done in previous years.  Although the show did not make money this year, there is a total balance in the show account of approx. $133,000.  The board voted to donate $5000 to the Winn Foundation from that fund.

Animal Welfare committee (Linda Berg)

Linda Berg reported that she has sent out 36 letters to catteries that had registered 75 or more kittens – only 5 did not respond.  Those five had their files flagged to halt their CFA services.  Subsequent letters were sent to those five and two complied with the mandatory cattery inspection.  The other three are still suspended.

Several people had been advertising on their personal websites that they were catteries of excellence, though they had not complied with those rules.  Linda contacted them – all requested the appropriate forms.

Winn Foundation (George Eigenhauser)

The Winn Foundation met on Friday and numerous grants were approved.  This was not a written report, as the time was too short, but further info will be in the official minutes.

Breeds and Standards (Peg Johnson)

Originally three new breeds applied for Miscellaneous status with CFA – the Peterbald, the Owyhee Bob and the Ragamuffin.  The first two withdrew their applications prior to the Board meeting.  The Ragamuffins had a display of cats on hand for the board to see.

After a question and answer period with a representative of the Ragamuffins, they were accepted by the board, with 5 negative votes.  The breed representative was asked to withdraw the pointed cats, she complied,  They can be registered, but as AOV’s.

I do not have my individual notes from the breed ballots, they are at work.  Most of those items that passed the breed councils by a margin of 60% were approved by the board.  Notable among those were the pointed and white Orientals and the 8-generation pedigree for the Persian.  The 8-generation pedigree had been requested by a margin of 80% of the voting breed council.  Initially the board approved the registration change, then Rachel Anger came back and asked that the vote be reconsidered.  Eventually, after a long discussion, the 8-generation pedigree requirement for Persians was approved with a start date of 2/5/04, which is the day after the next February board meeting.

CFA at the Garden show (Gary Veach, liaison)

Show will be held on October 11-12, 2003.  Format is 4 AB, 2 SP, with three judges doing Best of the Best.  Allbreed judges are Harding, Adkison, Williams and Angell, Specialty judges are Trevathan and Doernberg.  BOB judges are Mare, Veach and Hutzler. Publications committee report (Carol Krzanowski)

The Yearbook production is behind schedule and at this time it is impossible to project a target date for completion.  Staffing problems in CO, as well as the decision to accept submissions long after the published deadline have put things behind.  In addition, the Yearbook Editor is on maternity leave, further complicating matters.

CFA Centennial Committee (Rachel Anger/Jean Grimm)

2006 is CFA’s centennial anniversary.  The committee is planning Almanac articles on the history and development of CFA, interviews with CFA veterans.   They are encouraging shows to feature an anniversary theme and want to design and implement a special 100-year logo for ring signs, rosettes, catalog covers, regional/national award trophies, CFA merchandise etc., all for use in the 2005-2006 season.  Jean announced the formation of a CFA Centennial “Club”, membership in which is limited to any and everyone wishing to participate.  Requirement for membership is a one-time $100 membership fee.  The “club” will raise funds for a blowout celebration at the Northwest Region annual in 2006.  Donations are gratefully accepted.

CD and video report (JoAnn Cummings)

Jo Ann continues to work hard on the breed video and was asked to develop a grooming video as well.

Web Site Committee (Darryl Newkirk, Liaison for Karen Lawrence)

Online catalog sales for 2002 were $96,345.

Mentor Committee (Pat Jaccoberger, Chair)

The committee thanks those that volunteered to be mentors.  An initial 10-person pairing will begin shortly, pairing mentors with newbies.  The committee wants this process to begin slowly, so they can carefully track its process.

Legislative committee report – (Joan Miller)

Joan’s is a rather extensive report, I will scan it and it will be a separate item.

Again, these notes are from my personal observations and are by no means official

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks,

Debbie Kusy
