Notes from the February 2004 CFA board meeting.
These are my personal notes from the February 2004 board meeting. These are by no means the official minutes of the meeting and should not be taken as such. The official minutes will be published by Rachel Anger, the CFA Secretary.
Five new club applications were discussed and voted on. They are as follows:
Cat Corea (Region 1) – this
is actually a reapplication from the October board meeting. All of the club members except the secretary
reside in
Cornish Rex Breed Club (Region 2) - Passed
Southwest Scottish Fold Fanciers –(Region 5) – Discussion revolved around the many Scottish Fold clubs already in existence, I pointed out that the proposed secretary for this club was already the secretary of another Scottish Fold club – The International Scottish Fold Association. Voted taken, club passed, Williams, Delabar, Calhoun, Newkirk, Berg, Veach, Barnaby, Wilson and Kusy voting “no”.
Bombay Enthusiasts of America (Region 6) – Club application passed.
Resignation was accepted from the Chesapeake Cat Club (Region 7) and no action was taken on the Pine Tree State Cat Club’s (Region 1) letter of resignation submitted by the club secretary. Many other club members had written letters, stating that they did not want the club to resign.
Treasurer’s report (Kathy Calhoun)
Most of CFA’s expenses are within budget or favorable as
compared to the prior year. The
Jody Garrison will head a task force to investigate all CFA licensing agreements.
International Committee report (Stan Barnaby)
Catalog required forms and other show-related forms will be made available in a PDF format to save the cost of shipping them overseas. The Intl. Div. Clubs can download the forms and print them locally, saving printing and mailing costs from Central Office
George Cherrie was appointed coordinator of the “sister club” effort.
A judging school will be held on
Judging Program Committee Report (Stan Barnaby, liaison)
Resignations were received from Ann Pevey and Vaughn Barber, due to health issues. Both were accepted with regret and best wishes.
All applicants were accepted and all who were up for advancement were advanced.
National Birman Fanciers, a region 3 club, has asked for permission to hold their shows in Region 1 in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Permission approved.
Portland Cat Club, a Region 2 club, asked for permission to
hold a show in
The last full weekend in April is established as the last weekend of the show season. If there is a split weekend (such as there is in 2005), the weekend of April 30-May will be the first weekend of the new show season,. This rule will be added to the National Awards section of the Show rules.
Tom Dent reported that all registered cattery names will be up on the CFA web site later in February. This will help people trying to register a cattery name see what is available and what it not.
Minutes will also be provided free of charge on the web site (I am not sure from my notes if this is permanent or temporary – this will be clarified later.)
An increase in the cost of reverse pedigrees was
proposed. The new cost structure is as
follows – the minumum price is $20 (formerly
$10). It will be $100 for a cat born
between
International show (Debbie Kusy)
Over 20 sites were considered for the 2005 show, many from
suggestions on the CFA list. After much
discussion,
Finals placements will not be announced during the finals at the International show, so there will be more suspense and surprise as people will not know where they have placed.
The judge’s assignments will be drawn on Thursday night, rather than Wednesday afternoon.
Clerking report (Debbie Kusy)
This year is the year of the clerking test. Any clerk who submits a question that is used on the test gets a 2-point credit on their test.
Public Relations and Marketing report (Michael Brim)
Friskies will continue to provide show materials, such as end of row signs, ring number, etc. Petmate was so pleased with the response to their raffle offer that they are continuing the program through 2004.
Results of the voting on individual breeds – I will only give the board vote on those items which passed the breed council balloting:
Cornish Rex – Both passed
Japanese Bobtail – 1st one passed, the resolution regarding the inclusion of the Kurilian Bobtails as registered Japanese Bobtails failed the board vote.
Javanese – 1, 2 and 3 passed, 4 failed, 5 failed ( I am not sure of my notes on these, this could be incorrect. Please refer to the official minutes or to the Javanese BC secretary).
Korat – failed
La
Oriental – all seven passed
Persian – (General) – all three passed
Solid Division - # 2 passed
Tabby Division – passed
Scottish Fold - #1 – failed. #2 passed
Selkirk Res – both passed

Persian 8-generation pedigree issue – In February 2003, the
board has granted the request of the Persian breed council to install an
8-generation pedigree requirement for imports and cats coming from other
registries. This had gone into effect on
Friday. After much discussion, the board
voted to overturn that, Persian’s now require only a 5-generation pedigree. In addition, the board has directed that the
other breeds which now require 8 generation pedigrees be required to re-justify
their need for that many generations.

Core committee members will be permitted to show at this year’s show. Several proposals have been received to do the publicity for the show. These will be considered and a decision will be made.
Legislative (Joan Miller)
The U.S. Supreme Court denied the appeal of the Doris Day Animal League, which would have required all retail breeders of cats and dogs to be federally licensed and inspected. This is a major victory! Many local ordinances were withdrawn or defeated thanks to the work of local fanciers.
Anna Sadler, a key member of the legislative team, has been very ill and in the hospital for about a month. Joan and Sharon Coleman have been kept very busy trying to keep up with the many new bills that have been introduced. Anna is wished a speedy and full recovery.
Junior Showmanship (Emily Turner)
Emily reported that she is very concerned about the number of judges that have refused to participate in the program. Some have even been very outspoken in their disapproval of the program. She has a great concern for the future of Junior Showmanship.
The Hartz Mountain Company has
agreed to fund the program for 2004-2007.
There are over 200 people participating on the CFA Mentoring list on the
internet. There are 120 Protégées
enrolled in the program and 105 Mentors.
All regions have mentors and protégés except for
Website report (Gina Wiley Lehman)
The CFA website was selected as a Zookeepers Pet/Favorite for the week of 11/5-11/12, 2003. The following are new features on the website:
1) Link to FAQ pages added to the bottom of all pages on the site
2) A new edition of Fanc-e Mews available for Jan-Feb
3) Addition of Tabby Persian and Siamese articles to the site
4) Addition of the “links” from CFA show schedule to the club flyer or online entry
5) Real-time credit card processing now in use on the site
6) “Herman” is now online to check grand points.
Publications Committee (Mark Hannon)
Since there will only be six paper editions of the Almanac, the committee recommended the best LH and SH in Championship, Best LH and SH in Premiership and Best LH and SH kitten to grace the covers of the Almanacs. This would ensure a good balance between the LH’s and the SH’s.
The Feb 2004 board meeting minutes will be the last ones to be published in the paper copy of an Almanac. After that they will be available on line and in hard copy via subscription.
Show results are now online. For now access to the online show results is free of charge.
Marna Fogerty will once again participate in an “outreach” program to try to lure advertisers back to the Yearbook. The book is slated to be mailed on time, in late January.
Many photographers agreed to allow the use of their images – the Child’s dictionary is now complete. This will be in the form of a booklet, to be given to children attending shows. Sponsorship will be sought for the booklet.
Again, this is all from my personal notes and by no means a complete report. If anyone has any questions, please do no hesitate to contact me.
